Students of color must develop a postive relationship with words, reading, and writing. These must be seen as tools of value and creation.

Why Rooted In Reading?

Rooted in Reading recognizes the inept foundational skills of reading in students of color. This phenomenon has led to a widening literacy gap between African American and Caucasian students. Rooted in Reading aims to create empowerment, impact, and self-awareness in young minds to mitigate this issue.

Language, reading, and writing have always been important to the African American community.

During the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade, these luxuries were not privileged to many of the enslaved Africans. Despite the challenges and extremities, many enslaved Africans pursued these freedoms in secrecy. At the base of it, these freedoms anchored or rooted the enslaved Africans to narrate their experience, oppression, struggles, and triumphs. It is in the determination of this spirit in which Rooted in Reading was created.
