Mission Statement

Rooted in Reading mission is provide direct instruction to students of color to improve their reading and comprehension while engaging them in learning and building their confidence to be successful.

Philosophy

Rooted in Reading believes reading is an essential component in students of color lives. Reading provides enjoyment that cannot be provided with any digital tool or technology—reading grounds students’ minds. It ignites creativity and imagination while giving students vicarious experiences.

Reading stirs or provokes students to philosophize on life and its inner workings. It instills in students the power of words and language. As seen in ancestral or ancient civilizations, language unlocked fate and guided one's paths. Within books, Rooted in Reading strives to provide students the same opportunities. Reading will drive students’ fate and success moreso and give them the tools and knowledge to apply to their lives and circumstances.

Furthermore, reading evokes emotion and connects our differences as oneness. It provides students of color with positive experiences and exposure to students’ culture, experiences, and themselves mirrored in literature.

Reading to create empowerment, impact, and self-awareness.

Beliefs

Every child can read with the appropriate interventions and support.

Labels such as “struggling readers, low readers, & poor readers” are terms that do not contribute to a positive reading attitude. Challenges with reading is not permanent but temporary.

Reading is an essential life-long skill that can bring enjoyment and a necessity to navigate and unlock opportunities in the world.
